It is important for healthcare professionals to look after their physical and mental wellbeing, and it is important to seek support when needed.

Support available within the hospital:

  • Freedom to speak up (NHS England 2025a)
  • Hospital education department
  • Speak to your ward clinical lead/ matron
  • Occupational health

Mental Health Crisis (MIND 2025)

A mental health crisis is when you feel overwhelmed and in urgent need of support. You may experience:

  • Feeling intensely anxious, and experiencing panic attacks or flashbacks.
  • An episode of hypomania, mania or psychosis.
  • Feeling suicidal, or self harming.

Crisis services available:

  • Going to A&E or call 999 if you are unable to get there.
  • Emergency GP appointments.
  • Mental health helplines.
